Google recently announced a fantastic incentive for talented coders to create some killer apps for their new Mobile platform - Android. For those who have not heard about this please view the video below.
How cool is the location based information now imagine how many useful applications can be built for this?
Android will be developed on the LINUX platform for mobile and is being backed by some major handset and mobile telecoms companies such as T-Mobile and HTC who have also joined up to open handset alliance. What will be interesting is how this will interfere with the iPhone market who in my opinion are looking for design and aesthetics over function. Google will be play up to the more feature aware consumer by integrating gmail, google docs, google calendar, maps, google talk - now think of all these features on one device and synchronised with your online platform now that is what i want.
"There are at least 3 billion mobile users in the world today, and there are more mobile phones worldwide than there are internet users or landline phones," says Eric Schmidt, its chairman and chief executive. "Getting people access to info is Google's core mission and mobile phones have to be part of that."
Now i can hear you all screaming about privacy of information and how google will use my mobile data including location to spam me with commercial products and offers but i believe technology is heading this way anyway and it already happens online so its only a matter of time before we start to see this transferring to the mobile market. We may as well get some benefits and use from the service - i still cannot figure out why Microsoft have done so badly in this area - they could have been ahead of the game but their Windows mobile platform is really poor. So hopefully google will do a better job with their mobile apps as it certainly look good from their video demo, with £5 million pounds to incentivise excited coders i cant see this being an issue.
So what are you waiting for get coding....
